From time to time, we're asked, "What is a transit?"

A transit is an instrument commonly used by surveyors consisting of four principal parts: a telescope; a spirit level; a vernier or graduated arc for measuring vertical or horizontal angles; and a tripod with leveling screws for adjustments.
